Morning Report: Cody Garbrandt gives update on return, discusses drug testing in the UFC

Over the weekend, Team Alpha Male’s Urijah Faber returned to the octagon in sensational fashion, knocking out Ricky Simon in 46 seconds. Afterwards, Faber called out double champ Henry Cejudo, and also threw some shade on his former teammate, T.J. Dillashaw for his failed drug test, saying he’d be happy to fight Dillashaw when that “little cheat” would finally be eligible to return. That reaction is to be expected as Faber’s main protege, Cody Garbrandt, lost his title to Dillashaw, and from the sounds of it, is still upset about how everything has played out. Speaking backstage before Faber’s fight (video from MMAJunkie), Garbrandt addressed Dillashaw’s failed drug test, questioning USADA’s testing since they couldn’t catch Dillashaw earlier, despite Garbrandt telling them he was on performance enhancing drugs. “He stole a lot from me,” Garbrandt said. “I wasn’t surprised at all. I was surprised that’s the first time USADA’s ever tested for EPO. I stated back in - what was it 2017? - that I’d like to do more invasive testing. We have to log in everywhere we go. We have to answer the door at 6:00am, piss, urine, blood, everything, write down every supplement we have. There should be no boundaries or picos or this or that. You either cheat or you don’t. “The first time he got tested for EPO was when he fought Henry? It’s crazy. What are they even testing for. We’re not in there shooting steroids and getting big, they’re doing EPO, they’re doing all that kind of sh*t to cardio base. I knew that. I knew T.J. was on that and that’s why I said I wanted more invasive testing. He’s been on it for five, six years. And that’s not the only thing he’s on. There’s a lot of other fighters that are on sh*t too, so if you’re gonna draw a line on what we can do or how we can test - you can’t keep this sample, we can’t detect EPO - then what are we getting tested for? Let it all be legal and let’s all get juiced up and go in there and f*ck each other up.” Garbrandt makes a point. Until recently, EPO has not been something USADA usually tested for as it required special analysis. However, that doesn’t change the facts on the ground and Garbrandt is trying to move past what he can’t control, though he admits it is hard not to think about what he lost sometimes. “I wouldn’t say that I don’t think about it, you know what I mean?,” Garbrandt said. “What if? But now it’s like, I know I’m the best in the world, drug free. I’ve had probably over 40 tests from USADA and nothing. There’s been nothing that’s been illegal or anything. So like I said, I think we have to change the guidelines on that.” In the meantime, the only thing Garbrandt can control is his own future. After suffering a hand injury in his loss to Pedro Munhoz, the former bantamweight champion says he’s targeting a late fall return, and he’s happy to take on anyone in the top five so he can get back to a title shot. “I’m feeling great,” Garbrandt said. “I’m looking forward to a November return. I just got cleared. I ended up tearing my hand. I tore my tendon in my wrist so that was a pretty extensive injury in the [Pedro] Munhoz fight. I don’t know what happened in there. We were in a little bit of a gun battle and it just didn’t heal. “I know I’m way better than these guys but I sometime go to their level when I bang it out. But when I stick to my skills, my speed, when I do what I’ve done to become a world champion, no one can match me. The main thing is just staying hungry, motivated. . . “November I’d like to return and anyone in the top five can get it. I like all those fights. Dominick Cruz, that would be a fun rematch. He hasn’t fought since I beat him and he’s had a lot of injuries. Raphael Assuncao. There’s that Russian kid [Petr Yan], I forget his name now. There’s so many dudes that I’d like to fight at the top. I truly believe I’m the best in the world.” But if Garbrandt does return to his winning ways, he still may have to wait for a title shot as his coach and mentor Urijah Faber may jump the line at bantamweight.
