Who is the best middleweight in MMA? UFC middleweight Robert Whittaker? Probably. Interim champ Israel Adesanya? Maybe even Yoel Romero despite losing to Whittaker twice?
While I personally wouldn't make that argument, I cannot rule it out. After UFC 241, Romero lost a decision to Paulo Costa, but like the Whittaker fights, it was a razor close call.
In MMA, we incorporate a scoring system that allows for wide latitude in interpretation. But if we do that, we have to allow for some latitude in interpreting the limits of greatness. Specifically, while judges play a critical role, we cannot allow for them to be the final arbiter of greatness.
While I wouldn't argue Romero is MMA's best middleweight, I wouldn't begrudge someone who did. This video explains why.
